Imaging · file CON-03

When imaging is negative

CT and MRI answer questions about anatomy and urgent structural problems. A concussion can affect function without creating a finding that routine imaging can see.

01

What a scan is for

In acute care, imaging decisions are tied to the possibility of serious structural injury. CDC adult mTBI recommendations caution against routine imaging for every mild TBI and against routine repeat imaging after a baseline CT shows no hemorrhage.

02

What a negative scan does not answer

A clear scan does not independently answer whether a person had a concussion, how symptoms affect work or school, or how long recovery will take. Those questions require clinical evaluation and a documented course.
